Provision VPC and EC2 Instance (AWS) - Pre-Built Workflows

Let’s move into the provisioning use-case.  Let’s first take a look at one of the Pre-Built workflows that we are using in today’s workshop.

Step 1

From IAP Cloud, log in to your IAP instance by clicking on the blue Launch icon.

Click Workflows on the left to expand the Workflow menu.

Step 3

Expand the Workflow Group Provision VPC and EC2 Instance - AWS, and then select the Create EC2 Instance – AWS workflow.

Step 4

In this workflow, you can see various task types. IAP has four task types: Termination, Automatic, Operational, and Manual.  Let’s define these individually.

• Every automation has Termination tasks at the beginning and the end.  All other tasks in the automation will be placed between the beginning and ending Termination tasks.
• The green tasks represent Automatic tasks. These tasks will execute without intervention.
• Next are Operational tasks, which are purple. Operational tasks are used to control workflows with conditional branches and loops, and to manipulate run time data.
• The fourth task type is Manual tasks, which are not present in this pre-built workflow. When used, manual tasks are grey and represent tasks that require human interaction.

This workflow will be incorporated into the workflow we will build later in the training through a Child Job task and will be used to create the EC2 Instance needed to successfully run our automation.

Step 5

Now that we’ve gone over the Itential Pre-Built Workflow, we’ll continue with our workshop exercise.  What we are going to cover will include … 

•  Consuming a JSON Form to gather the inputs needed for the automation
• Consuming a Transformation (JST) to manipulate the data from form input to the Itential Pre-Built
• Building a Workflow that will put this all together
• And Creating an Operations Manager catalog entry that will tie this together with a manual trigger
