# Password reset for local Gateway users

> How to reset passwords and recover credentials for Gateway servers configured with local authentication.

Since the 2021.1 release, Itential Gateway supports password reset capability.

> **Info**
>
> Password reset is only supported for Gateway servers configured for local authentication. Password reset is not supported in Gateway when LDAP authentication is enabled.

## First time login

When you log in for the first time, a Change Password feature is enabled that allows you to enter a new password.

* You will be asked to reset your password and select and answer security questions.
* A unique email account is required for Gateway user accounts.
* The email, security questions, and answers set by this functionality will be used as an identifier for username and password recovery of the account.

## Username and password recovery

To recover your username or password:

#### Enter your email

Click the **Forget Username/Password** link and enter the email address associated with the account.

#### Answer security questions

Security questions set for the account will appear in a dialog box.

#### Reset your password

After answering the security questions correctly, your username is retrieved and you must reset your password for security purposes.

## Update security questions in user profile

Security questions and answers can also be updated from the **User Profile** page.

#### Open the authorization icon

Click the **Authorization** icon in the top toolbar on the Gateway home page.

#### Select new security questions

The **User Profile** dialog opens. Select new security questions from the dropdown and enter the appropriate answers.

#### Save your changes

Click **Save** to update the security questions and answers. Click **Close** to exit.
